Dropping Water

Project Summary

This project will train volunteers to test water for bacterial contamination. We will also supply 1000 families in Northern Nigeria with Water Pasteurization Indicators (WAPI's) and help them build safe cooking stoves.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

A million children world- wide die each year from contaminated drinking water, and many more are made ill with diarrheal diseases, preventing them from growing, attending school or helping their families. Families often drink contaminated water because they lack alternatives or the means to make their water safe.

How will this project solve this problem?

This project will train community health workers and others in Northern Nigeria to accurately test water supplies for bacterial contamination. The health workers will then test community drinking water, and families with contaminated drinking water will receive materials and assistance to help to make their water safe using Pasteurization and to cook on safer stoves.

Potential Long Term Impact

Our goal is to help 1000 families in Northern Nigeria by providing them with water testing and Water Pasteurization indicators (WAPI's). They will also be helped to obtain safe cooking stoves. These thousand families are part of a long term program to improve the health and reduce deaths and injuries to children and families and to help them to attend school and to be healthy.
